These days Sadira is interested in teaching the Dances of Martha Graham to contact improvisation dancers or those curious about contact improvisation, as well as CI classes based on her living experiences in Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. She will not focus as much on the transmission of the “Graham Technique”, but on the passage of her ideas and stories physically and compositionally, while working on rhythm, space and tone. Sadira A. Cruz Smith, a Minerva Award recipient, graduated summa cum laude with a BA in East Asian Studies and Diploma in Japanese Studies from Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, Japan. Originally a tapper, Sadira trained at the Fukuoka Kanako Ballet Research Laboratory in Saga, Japan and was a Jacob’s Pillow Scholar and Martha Graham Scholar. She has danced for the Paris Opera Ballet, Shen Wei Dance Arts, David Gordon, Julie Taymor, Kota Yamazaki, Buglisi Dance Theater and the Martha Graham Dance Company. After a fruitful meeting with contact improvisation (CI), she took a leave from the modern dance world to re-evaluate her relationship to movement practices, daily physical training, and performance energies. Since 2008 she has collaborated and taught for the Contact Improvisation Festival Japan and the Contact Improvisation Festival in Haifa, Israel.
