Choreoroam EU

8-15. July 2012.
The European Platform of professional workers, dancers/choreographers and artists, Choreoroam EU, is coming to Zagreb 8-15th July. Through a research process it investigates choreographic challenges on the topic: what impression does choreography leave on the viewer? How to establish communication between vaious work methodologies that choreographers use?

The mentor and leader of the process of Choreoroam EU 2012 Zagreb is Ann van der Broek.

ChoreoRoam Europe is a EU platform of professional workers, dancers/choreographers and other artists such as writers, which aims to achieve a constructive dialogue within the profession, with the purpose of developing esential characteristics of artistic leadership skills. The project strenghtens the artists' mobility by encouraging dialogue between various cultures and within a wider social context, through a wide network of collaborants that spreads throughout Europe.

Choreoroam includes 12 professional cultural workers, 19 choreographers, 10 film/video artists, 10 workshop facilitators/pedagogists, 10 writers/scientists from Croatia, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and Great Britain, as well as other European countries, who research ideas on functionality and role of dance and art. Young artists are helped to develop their own strategies towards a successful carreer in order to develop an audience for their own performances and achieve their own network of collaborators, to expand their field of action, which strenghtens the support for the European community outside performing arts.

The leading partner is Comune di Bassano del Grappa (IT), with Croatian Institute for Movement and dance. Partners are: Contemporary Dance Trust - The Place (UK), Dansateliers (NL), Pasoa 2 Platforma Coreografica Asociacion Cultural (ES).

Ann van der Broek (B/ NL)

After completing her dance education (June 1991) at the Rotterdamse Dansacademie (Rotterdam Dance Academy), Ann Van den Broek danced with the Elisa Monte Company (New York, 1990), Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel (Amsterdam, 1991-1998), Galili Dance (Groningen, 1998) and Charleroi/Danses (Charleroi, 1998-2000).

In the ten years she worked as a dancer, she was always researching and developing her own dance idiom, and in December 2000 she decided to dedicate herself to developing her own choreographic work. Under the umbrella of vzw WArd/waRD (Antwerp, B), Korzo Productions (The Hague, NL) and Danswerkplaats Amsterdam she created a number of choreographies. At this moment  she works independently from her own non-profit organizations WArd/waRD vzw ( Belgium ) and, from the end of 2008 established WArd/waRD foundation ( The Netherlands ) and has she specifically chosen a Dutch-Flemish structure.
The choreographiesthat Ann Van den Broek made the last years are a.o. FF+REW 60:00, E19 ( richting San José ), Co(te)lette, I SOLO MENT, We Solo Men, Ohm, The Co(te)lette Film, Q61, LIstEn & See (LIES), KAMEPA and Domestica.
Co(te)lette won the ‘Zwaan’ (Swan Award) for most impressive dance production in 2008. The Swan Award is the most prestigious Dutch dance prize.

Ann Van den Broek has also received the Mouson Award 2009/2010 for her works. The Mouson Award is initiated by the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt (Germany). She also won awards with The Co(te)telette Film during filmfestivals in Los Angeles (USA), Nicosia (CYP), Brussels (B) and San Francisco (USA).
Aside from her work as a choreographer, she is also a teacher and regularly invited to give training courses and workshops that focus on her vision on contemporary dance and her own style.

vzw WArd/waRD was founded in November 2000 in Antwerp to allow Ann Van den Broek to realize her choreographic work. Since then WArd/waRD has (co-)produced a number of productions. In 2008 a Dutch WArd/waRD (Stichting WArd/waRD) was founded too.

The meaning of ‘ward’, according to the dictionary, reads as follows: n. 1) the act of guarding; 2) the state of being under guard; 3) guardianship, being under control of a guardian; 4) a means of defense or protection; 5) a division of a jail or prison, or of a hospital; 6) a district or division of a city or town; vt. 1) to fend off, parry; 2) to keep watch over, guard, protect. In short, in relation to the organization, it is a place where it is safe to congregate and work.

Repeating the ‘ward’ in de name implies the duality that is always present in the work of Ann Van den Broek. The title is the key to the character of the organization; there is not just one ‘ward’, but there is another: a mirror image, a darker side, a conscience, a sparring partner.

In this context and atmosphere, the organization tries to be a creative and inspiring environment in which artists can develop and grow.
