‘Cooling Down Signs’ speaks about a prevailing sense we increasingly witness today: apathy. My intention was to create a piece which embodies the idea of a performative archive for a state of inaction that I feel we (my generation) navigate in. The piece is composed as a playlist of reflections: about strategies of coping with the challenges the world throws at us; strategies on how to (un)occupy this body or even this space. To cool down, to allow the body to gradually transition from a state of the excessive to one more restful, or near-resting state; a metaphor perhaps for exhaustion (Franco Berardi) we are facing: exhausted times, exhausted conventions in dance. Speaking about this means also to speak about a certain immobility that arises, and even, to withdraw from society, community, body, or to space out in an effort to face exhaustion: exhausted times, exhausted conventions in dance. To speak of these concepts means also to speak about a certain immobility and the moment where there is little to say.

As an introduction to the upcoming 30th Dance Week Festival, Zagreb Dance Centre will be hosting a performance of a piece by the Canadian choreographer Daniel Léveillé  - Solitudes Solo, on May 17th and 18th.

To better unveil his dancers, Daniel Léveillé subjects them to the test of the solo and to impossible choreographic scores. The infinite slowness of improbable sayings is now added to his last three works’ rough and syncopated dancing. A man holds a pose while falling in slow motion; a leg endlessly detaches itself from a body out of its axis. Minutes of eternity during which emotions come up to the surface. Unexpected softness, almost lyrical. Sublime beauty of intensely present dancers. To the sound of Bach violins that no human destiny could ever interfere with, they quickly pull themselves together; put on their armours anew. Clenched fists, glaring eyes, they leave again for the fight. Solitude is their battlefield.

Sensitive dances is a series focusing on the sublime and untouchable layers of dance. It focuses on the origin of movement, that which encompasses and in which is allowed to be created and then disappear in space, one which we can but catch a glimpse of or is barely visible; one which even when invisible is still tangible. Stemming from the position that movement is inherent to the body that the body has the desire to move, be moved and to be understood in the moving, this series is like a personal diary of movement, a study on the reservoirs of body memory and subtle dialogue between bodies sharing space and time.

Why bones?
Because they are inside us, they carry us and put up with us, hold and support and define us.
Because they create motion even when we are not aware of it.
Because we can lean and rely on them.
Because we can somewhat shape them with our own will.
Because they live the longest and are the only witness to our life long after death.
Because I believe they should be the symbol of life, not death.
Because they tell me that the end is not neccessarily the ending to a story...

IMRC is the performative core of the Dance Integration Workshop which since its formation in 2012 has been hosted by the Zagreb Dance Centre and facilitated by Iva Nerina Sibila and Amela Pasalic. The workshop reflects the belief that dance and movement is not a pre-condition, nor does it require a specific body, rather that movement expression and the practice of moving together and therefore also researching possibilities of dance performance belong to all. To those without visible physical challenges, as well s to those challenged to move and with other disabilities.
